| Things to Do in Albany, New York: USS Slater DE 766 |
The USS Slater is a Cannon Class Destroyer Escort, one of 565 produced during World War II. It is the last Destroyer Escort Warship still seen in WWII battle configuration as well as the only one remaining afloat in the United States. It is docked on the Hudson River off of Broadway on Madison Avenue located in downtown Albany.
The USS Slater was named after the naval war hero Frank O. Slater. The ship was commissioned in 1943, and then launched the following year. The ship’s mission was anti-submarine warfare while serving as an escort to ship convoys across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. After it was decommissioned in 1947 the USS Slater served for a period in the Greek Navy. It was even seen in the 1961 film, The Guns of Navarone.
Tours of the USS Slater offer the opportunity for visitors to see how the crew lived and carried out its mission. After an extensive ten-year restoration many sections of the ship are in authentic condition and open to the public. These include: the armaments, combat information and radio rooms, pilot house, officer’s country, galley, mess, and crew sleeping quarters. The ship is open to the public from April to November. The hours of operation are: Wednesday thru Saturday from 10:00AM-4:00PM.
